Places of Interest

San Cristóbal de La Laguna, declared a World Cultural and Heritage Site by Unesco, has maintained its highly valued historic centre in an exemplary state of conservation. As well as important monuments and historic buildings, there is an important centre of commercial activity, offering the chance to buy souvenirs to remember your visit to the island: fashion, Tenerife wines, Canarian craftwork and typical gastronomical products. The city has an important university tradition, thus providing the liveliness and relaxed atmosphere of its countless tascas.

The town of La Orotava retains a perfectly defined historic centre, which has been declared of historical and artistic interest. Among its streets packed with interesting buildings, there is a wealth of admirable architecture, such as the Ermita del Calvario hermitage, the church of San Agustín, Constitución Square, the street Carrera del Escultor Estévez, the church of Santo Domingo and the former convent of San Benito Abad.

The town and port of Garachico, founded by the Genoese Christopher de Ponte in 1496, covetously guards the evidence of its brilliant past with stately homes, convents and churches that are architecturally important in their own right. Garachico, declared a site of cultural interest in the Historic Group category, has the following buildings of great interest: the Ermita de San Roque hermitage, the former convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, the El Lamero hacienda, the houses of the Marquis of Quinta Roja, Casa de Piedra stately home, the Antigua Puerta de Tierra park, the Matriz de Santa Ana church and the castle of San Miguel.

The historic quarter of the district of Puerto de la Cruz was declared a Historic Artistic Area in 1985. It combines a long history with a nautical flavour as up to the 18th century it was the port of the town of La Orotava. It also has the liveliness and drive of the tourist resort it is today and has been since the 19th century, when it was one of the pioneering tourist resorts in Spain and Europe.Historical and modern features mix in a traditionally nautical district. From the central and ever-busy square known as, the Plaza de El Charco, the pedestrian streets lead passers-by to buildings of great historical value, such as the Chapel of San Telmo, the Casa Miranda, the old hotel Marquesa, the Church of la Peña de Francia and the Casa de la Aduana. Next to the harbour is the equally charming fishing neighbourhood of La Ranilla. A little further away is the Botanical Gardens founded in the 17th century to acclimatise plant species brought from South America, Africa and Asia.

The historic quarter of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, capital of the island is located in the area of the city closest to the sea next to its important commercial port. Wine Tas
