Welcome to the Blackwater Bungalow Whether you are a sport fisherman, outdoor enthusiast or a winter-weary vacationer, the Blackwater Bungalow is the perfect home base for your vacation of a lifetime in New Zealand! Thank you for your interest in our comfortable cottage overlooking the Mangles River just outside Murchison, South Island, New Zealand.

About the Blackwater Bungalow We rent the fully furnished house three nights minimum, by the week or month to responsible guests. The house has three bedrooms, one full bath/laundry room with washer and dryer, and one half bath.

The kitchen opens onto a large living-dining area, creating a great-room effect. Glass doors open to a spacious patio overlooking the river. The full kitchen has all the essentials, including a microwave, toaster, and coffee maker. Basic seasonings and condiments are on hand. Just bring your favorite ingredients to prepare wonderful meals. Murchison has a good grocery store and quality fresh produce meat and fish.

The master-room has a queen-size bed and is the best place to enjoy the nighttime lull of the river’s song. The other two bedrooms look out to native gardens, and each sleeps upto two comfortably in twin beds and a double/ single bunk combination. All linens are provided.

A short walk through a canopy of native bush leads to our private, sandy beach with a delightfully clear, deep pool, a perfect swimming environment ever-refreshed by the river’s gentle current.

The house is surrounded by native bush and native gardens. The tropical splendor encourages New Zealand’s bird life. Tuis, keas, fantails, pukeko and the fabled bell bird can all be seen and heard in our tranquil valley. The ability to enjoy hiking, climbing, fishing, kayaking and biking within steps of our door, without need of a car, is a wonderful feature of our home. Motoring from the house offers a vast array of adventures, from mountains to rainforest to ocean!

Trout Fishing: The Buller River system, along with majestic Lakes Rotoroa and Rotoiti, offers some of the finest fishing in the world. Because so many rivers flow out of the mountains into the Buller, anglers enjoy an abundance of fishing options closeby.

Rivers: The Buller is the big river in the north. With a humble beginning from the overflow of Lake Rotoiti, the river picks up water from the Gowan, Owen, Hope, Mangles, Matiri, Matikitaki, Mariua, Deepdale and Inangahua, to name a few of the major tributaries.

Lakes: Lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa are part of the Nelson Lakes National Park and just a hop over the hill from Murchison. Ringed by steep mountains, the lake settings are truly breathtaking with Black Swans swimming peacefully in both lakes. Excellent fishing rivers enter the far end of both lakes and hut accommodation is available at all three rivers, making the fishing options endless, river and lake alike.
