About Sri Lanka

The natural beauty of Sri Lanka's tropical forests, unspoilt sandy beaches and landscape, as well as its rich cultural heritage make it a world famous tourist destination. Sri Lanka is further characterised by its breathtaking mountains, waterfalls, nature reserves, large inland lakes, tea plantations and an extremely friendly population. The Island is famous for the export of tea, coffee, coconuts, rubber and cinnamon, which is native to the country.

After two millenia of rule by local kingdoms, parts of Sri Lanka were colonized by the Portugese & Dutch beginning in the 16th century, before control of the entire country was ceded to the British Empire in 1815. A nationalist political movement arose in the country in the early 20th century with the aim of obtaining independence, which was eventually granted by the British in 1948.

Although the Dutch were later succeeded by the British, they left deep marks of remembrances. Dutch names on tombstones, a beautiful church, the remains of a fortress and the town ramparts in Galle, situated on the south coast, are indications of the Dutch presence on this island. A combination of historical & architectural significance had led Galle Fort to be declared a World Heritage Site.

“The Old Lady at the Sea” located 7kms north-west of Galle, directly by the Indian Ocean, stood as a residual of the Dutch heritage. It has now been brought back to life by a Belgian family that reinforced and architecturally reconstructed and transformed it into a Villa that is luxurious yet simple, comfortable and filled with unpretentious ambiance.
