Silvaplanais located on Lake Silvaplana in the Upper Engadine Valley. Above town at 2284 m, Julier Pass connects the Engadine valley to the rest of Graubündenand the Rhine watershed.

The majority of the population speak German, though there are sizable Romansh and Italian speaking minorities.
