Right at the furthest east point of Grande-Terre, the parish of Saint-François was not established until the end of the 17th century (1688). Most of it was taken up by cotton crops until the beginning of the 19th century. Then sugar cane came along, and Saint-François became the third largest place for this industry. After the abolition of slavery, the owners brought in Indian contract workers to replace the slaves who had abandoned the plantations. Today this community is an important constituent part of the population. Following the closure of the last sugar factory, Sainte-Marthe, the town focused its economic policy primarily on tourism. With its hotels, restaurants, international golf course designed by Robert TRENT JONES, its regional airport, casino, market, marina, natural sites including the famous Pointe des Châteaux, designated by the ONF (National Forestry Commission), Saint-François offers its visitors a wide range of activities and endless opportunities for an enriching experience.
